NESO has issued an Electricity Margin Notice (EMN) for this evening, Tuesday 6th October 2026.

This follows the forecast of a 1,880MW system margin shortfall between 3pm and 11pm today, covering the evening peak when electricity demand is expected to be higher, meaning a request has been put through to the electricity market to make additional generation capacity available.

NESO issued its first ever summer margin notice in June, with further notices during the July heatwave. Those were linked to tight margins during periods of unusually high demand and challenging generation conditions.

NESO said: “[We have] issued an Electricity Margin Notice for this evening’s peak period, which is a routine and precautionary measure giving market participants the opportunity to make additional generation capacity available.

“There is no risk to customer electricity supplies, this is not a warning of power cuts, customers do not need to take action and Great Britain’s electricity system remains secure.”

This EMN may signify that tight electricity margins are becoming a recurring operational issue, rather than something confined to extreme winter conditions, such as the summer of 2026.
