National Grid has launched its North West London Upgrade (NWLU) project which includes a new substation, 60km of new cable and more than 200km of improved overhead line.
The project is designed to strengthen the electricity transmission network, support future growth and unlock new connections across North West London and surrounding areas.
Reinforcements and upgrades will be made to the existing St John Wood substation in London and the Sundon substation in Bedfordshire.
National Grid will also install a 400kV cable circuit in the existing Elstree–St John’s Wood tunnel and reconductor the 35km Sundon to Elstree overhead line route.
Joe Senior, Project Director at National Grid, said: “The North West London Upgrade is a nationally significant investment that will strengthen the electricity network, unlock new connections, support regional economic growth and help keep long term energy costs down for consumers.
As a part of the programme, communities near the new substation in Letchmore Heath will be eligible for up to £530,000 to be spent on projects that improve the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of the area.
