Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s announcement that Google Maps will now show the price of petrol and diesel for each forecourt has already received criticism.
Campaign group FairFuelUK have branded the move as “a weak, cosmetic gesture that ignores the real cause of high pump prices.”
The government say the update to Google Maps is expected to save drivers £40 per year.
The Prime Minister took to X to explain the app update, claiming it was a way of helping people keep “money their pockets”.
However, Howard Cox, Founder of FairFuelUK has called the announcement insulting.
He said: “This is tinkering at the edges. Drivers don’t need an app — they need a Government that stops treating them like tax cash cows.
“While more than 40 countries have stepped in to help their motorists with duty cuts, VAT reductions or direct support, the UK offers a pathetic Google Maps feature and calls it action. It’s insulting.”
While the government blames ongoing conflicts and other global events for the price of fuel, the campaign group say that fuel duty and VAT are the main drivers of record costs.
FairFuelUK are calling for Labour to cut fuel duty, review VAT and support diesel users who it says are “disproportionately hit”.
