Since 2012, Unicorn Systems has served as a long-term technology partner to European Nominated Electricity Market Operators (NEMOs) within the Price Coupling of Regions (PCR) initiative. The collaboration focuses on the ongoing development, operation, and technological evolution of the PMB (PCR Matcher Broker) application—a foundational component enabling both the integrated European Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) and Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC) auction markets.

With its initial production go-live in February 2014, PMB has supported cross-border market coupling across Europe for over a decade, facilitating more than 4,500 market coupling sessions. Notably, in 2025, SDAC recorded zero incidents of full or partial decoupling, and across the entire history of European market coupling, no decoupling incident has ever been attributed to the PMB system.

Client Motivation and Strategic Goals

The Price Coupling of Regions (PCR) initiative was established to create a harmonized, highly efficient European day-ahead electricity market. The core objective is to calculate electricity prices and allocate cross-border transmission capacities uniformly and simultaneously across all participating regions.

To achieve this, European NEMOs required a resilient, distributed integration architecture capable of connecting individual power exchanges, surrounding IT infrastructures, and the central EUPHEMIA price coupling algorithm—all while market volumes and regulatory complexity scaled rapidly.

Key Objectives:

  • Harmonized Market Operations: Enable simultaneous price calculation and cross-border capacity allocation across all coupled regions.
  • Seamless Distributed Integration: Provide a secure integration layer connecting NEMOs, Local Trading Systems, and the EUPHEMIA algorithm.
  • Enhanced Market Liquidity: Facilitate efficient cross-border power trading and optimize overall European economic welfare.
  • Increased Transparency: Establish uniform price formation and clear visibility of power flows across European borders.

The Solution: How PMB Operates Behind the Scenes

Behind every megawatt-hour traded on Europe’s day-ahead market is a continuous matching process. Market participants submit buy and sell orders through traders, producers, and suppliers to their respective national NEMO.

  1. Order Book Closure: Every day at 12:00 CET, order books close simultaneously across Europe within each NEMO’s local trading system.
  2. Data Aggregation via PMB: PMB collects anonymized order books from all participating NEMOs along with cross-border transmission capacities provided by Transmission System Operators (TSOs).
  3. Decentralized Execution: While appearing as a single central calculation, the optimization runs across eight independent PMB instances deployed at power exchanges co-owning the PCR solution. Each instance executes the pan-European EUPHEMIA optimization algorithm in parallel.
  4. Verification & Publication: The parallel calculations are compared, the optimal result is selected as the common European benchmark, and every NEMO validates the output.
  5. Real-Time Distribution: Within minutes, accepted orders and uniform clearing prices are communicated back to market participants.

This architecture replaces dozens of isolated national auctions with a single, highly coordinated European price signal, steering power flows directly to where demand is highest.

Architecture and Technological Evolution

PMB is engineered as a distributed application deployed across multiple NEMO locations and interconnected into a unified operational ecosystem. Communication relies on secure web services running over HTTPS.

To maintain alignment with evolving market requirements and regulatory mandates, Unicorn Systems maintains a continuous modernization roadmap focused on security, performance, and user experience:

  • Modern Single-Page GUI (PMB 13+): Transitioned from legacy server-side interfaces to a responsive, Single-Page Application (SPA) driven by REST APIs. This shift enhanced usability, simplified scalability, and accelerated the deployment of new features.
  • Enhanced Operational Insights: Implemented advanced performance monitoring, automated business health checks, and optimized message queues.
  • Future-Proof Stack: Continuous upgrades to core underlying frameworks (Java, Spring Framework, application servers) paired with rigorous penetration testing and data protection controls.

Key Milestones & Roadmap

  • 2012: Launch of the PCR project and initial PMB development.
  • 2014: Go-live of PMB for European Day-Ahead Market Coupling (SDAC).
  • 2018: Operational go-live for Continuous Intraday Trading (SIDC).
  • 2019: Implementation of Multi-NEMO Arrangements (MNA).
  • 2022: Major technological upgrade program and GUI modernization.
  • 2024: Go-live of Intraday Auctions (IDA1, IDA2, IDA3).
  • 2025: Successful deployment supporting 15-minute Market Time Units (MTU) in Day-Ahead trading.
  • 2026+: Expansion to new geographical regions (including prospective Energy Community countries) and the transition toward Flow-Based capacity calculation in intraday markets.

Quantifiable Impact and Results

  • 4,500+ successful market coupling sessions completed since February 2014.
  • 0 Decoupling Incidents ever caused by the PMB platform.
  • 2.57 Minutes: Average time to reach the first market solution following the 2025 transition to 15-minute market products (well within the standard 30-minute operational window).
  • ~1,900 TWh: Electricity volume traded on the European day-ahead market (SDAC) in 2025 alone.

Core Value Delivered

  • Uncompromising Reliability: A decade of flawless operation supporting critical national infrastructure across Europe.
  • Optimized Market Liquidity: Implicit capacity allocation maximizes cross-border trade and economic efficiency.
  • Robust Future Readiness: Built-in modularity already powering 15-minute MTUs and prepared for complex Flow-Based calculation models.

Client Overview & Endorsement

The PCR initiative is driven by eight major European power exchanges—EPEX SPOT, GME, HEnEx, Nord Pool EMCO, OMIE, OPCOM, OTE, and TGE—in close cooperation with Nominated Electricity Market Operators (NEMOs). Under Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/1222 (CACM), NEMOs are tasked with operating electricity markets and ensuring efficient cross-border trading across Europe.

“We greatly value our long-standing and highly effective cooperation with Unicorn Systems. Their expertise, reliability and continuous support help us to fulfil our responsibilities and consistently deliver robust market coupling results and reliable price formation across Europe’s integrated day-ahead and intraday electricity markets.”
