Engie expands Scottish battery storage to strengthen Britain’s clean energy future

ENGIE has reached full commercial operation of two new Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Scotland, reinforcing the role of flexible energy infrastructure in reducing emissions and supporting the UK’s transition to a low-carbon electricity system.

Located at Cathkin near East Kilbride and Broxburn, west of Edinburgh, the two 50MW/100MWh facilities provide a combined 200MWh of energy storage.

Designed with a two-hour duration, the batteries will capture surplus renewable electricity and release it back to the grid during periods of higher demand, helping to improve network stability while reducing reliance on fossil fuel generation.

As renewable energy continues to increase across Britain, large-scale battery storage is becoming an essential part of a more resilient electricity network. By balancing supply and demand, storage systems enable greater use of wind and solar power, minimise wasted renewable generation and support a more sustainable energy mix.

Both facilities are already participating in UK electricity and balancing markets using ORUS, ENGIE’s AI-driven optimisation platform.

The technology uses real-time data, advanced analytics and automated market participation to maximise operational performance while helping integrate increasing volumes of clean electricity into the grid.

The projects also highlight ENGIE’s integrated approach, combining development, construction, operations and digital optimisation to accelerate the UK’s journey towards a cleaner, more flexible and sustainable energy future.
