Energy theft has risen by 23% over five years, after there were 21,354 confirmed commercial and domestic cases in 2025-2026.
The figures collected by Crimestoppers reporting service Stay Energy Safe show there were 17,607 domestic cases and 3,747 at commercial properties.
Despite cases spanning the whole of the UK, the issue is most prevalent in London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow and Manchester.
A spokesperson from Stay Energy Safe, said: “Energy theft can involve illegally bypassing meters, tampering with equipment or connecting directly to electricity or gas supplies. This can have serious consequences, including fires, gas leaks, explosions and electrocution, all putting lives at risk.
“Gas and electricity theft is also often associated with wider criminality, including cannabis cultivation, illegal subletting and the exploitation of vulnerable people. This is certainly not a victimless crime.”
In response to the findings, Stay Energy Safe is launching its ‘Unknown Danger’ campaign, highlighting the dangers and criminality of energy theft.
The campaign encourages members of the public to report suspected energy theft safely and completely anonymously.
The organisation says if someone does have suspicions, they can report it by calling 0800 023 2777 or by filling out the online form.
