E.ON have been given clearance by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to go ahead with its acquisition of OVO Energy.

The clearance was given after the investigation opened on the 2nd of September, where the CMA looked into whether the move will reduce competition within its markets.

The agreement, which was signed back in May, is likely to make the merged companies the UK’s largest energy supplier.

However, there are still some unknown details as the energy giants have not yet disclosed the value of the deal but it’s expected to create a supplier with almost 10 million customers.

The second phase of the investigation will commence on the 28th of October, with the option for phase one to be extended in certain circumstances.

Until the inquiry is completed, the two suppliers will operate separately.
