An SSEN Distribution-led project has received funding from Ofgem to deliver quicker, less disruptive electricity connections.

The current system largely involves a ‘looped’ supply, meaning two properties share one street cable. Due to a large increase in energy usage per household, this system no longer supplies enough electricity. and increasingly needs replacing.

To get rid of the ‘looped’ system, it typically takes three days of digging through property surroundings to locate and remove it. SSEN’s new project aims to remove the system in one day by using alternative methods which don’t involve digging trenches.

Rhys Williams, SSEN Distribution’s project manager for Grounds for Change, says: “Millions of domestic supplies across the UK will require upgrading if they’re to support households’ ability to move over to cost-efficient, environmentally friendly Low-Carbon Technologies.

“My ambition is to identify ways we can do this work in a way that’s more convenient, less disruptive, less polluting, and makes better use of bill payers’ money. Having a range of methods at our disposal will also speed up the delivery of these improvements, because we’ll be drawing on a range of different suppliers.”

The project, called ‘Grounds for Change’, has been successful in securing funding from Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund.
