The importance of close collaboration with dealer clients has come to the fore at mfldirect.
The remarketing business, part of Motability Operations, is working hard to support motor retailers with new service developments that enable them to succeed in the industry-wide competition for high quality stock.
In this latest AM Supplier Insight interview, mfldirect’s group product manager Alex Overton outlined how she and her team get an understanding of clients’ needs and shape mfldirect’s website development to ensure it’s a fast, intuitive platform that helps dealers find and buy the right stock in record time.

She explains that one of its latest developments is a pre-order function, which helps dealer clients see what Motability cars are coming down the pipeline, ahead of the Motability customer’s return of the vehicle, and pre-order stock that suits their stock requirements.
This has been developed directly from mfldirect’s understanding of its dealer clients’ business pressures, in a marketplace with limited availability of 3-5 year old used cars.
It means that the dealer’s retail marketing can begin swiftly, helping them with speed of sale and protability.
“What we don’t do is sit in an office and think to ourselves ‘what do we think our mfldirect customers would like and would need,” she says.

“We speak to our customers all the time, so we have dedicated product teams, dedicated user experience teams who are constantly talking to our mfldirect customers, about what’s working well, what’s not working so well, and we have a really great relationship with them, so they’re very frank with us. They can be really open with us, but that helps us.
“We can directly influence what we’re of prioritising to work on, to make sure that those problem areas resolved as soon as we can.”
The mfldirect website gets around 1.1 million visits per month, which generates vast amounts of data that helps the company understand market demand. An example is the “fiercely competitive” three and a half year to five year plus market. More than 60% of mfldirect’s stock is in that age range, and Overton notes that half of the stock in this segment sells within 24 hours.
