Updated projections have been released for the £1 billion UK supply chain impact of five ‘super battery’ sites.

Released by Field, an energy storage platform, it is predicted that the five projects will provide 27.1 GWh of storage.

They will be the longest duration battery storage projects in the world, with their combined capacity enough to power four million homes for 24 hours.

The projects also work to combat frustrations of curtailed energy, particularly in Scotland, which is costing millions. Four of the five sites will be situated in Scotland, helping to store excess energy and strengthen energy security.

Amit Gudka, CEO of Field, said: “Long duration storage is the missing piece of the energy puzzle. The longer we can store wind and solar energy, the easier it is to send it through the grid to where people need it. The promise of cheap wind and solar – and therefore cheaper bills – becomes a lot more realistic with LDES. There’s no better way to end the maddening situation we have now of asking wind farms in Scotland to turn off because grid capacity is maxed out.”

Ofgem analysis predicts that the five projects will deliver £9 billion of consumer savings once operational, including by addressing the issue of grid constraints.
