A tidal energy project in Wales will soon begin to use AI-driven environmental monitoring.
Menter Môn’s 30MW project, Morlais, will deploy the technology to automatically distinguish marine wildlife such as seals, dolphins, fish and diving seabirds. It will also process the data of seaweed debris and algae.
The communications network will then relay the results, enabling operators to trigger instant environmental mitigation protocols.
Andy Billcliff, Chief Executive of Menter Môn Morlais Ltd, said: “It is great that the project will embed state-of-the-art environmental monitoring, supplied by Ecodetect, an innovative tech company also based on Anglesey.
“This is a superb example of local sourcing, which will bring further momentum to the North Wales economy, generating new jobs and social value.”
The same data will also be used as evidence needed to demonstrate compliance with UK, EU and international laws and standards.
Morlais is the largest consented scheme of its kind in Europe and the first tidal energy device is set for deployment in 2027.
