The government have announced that drivers will no longer need to secure planning permission to install cross-pavement EV chargers.

The infrastructure runs under the ground from homes to cars which have no access to a driveway, with Labour claiming it will save people hundreds on installation.

Simon Lightwood, Buses and Local Transport Minister, said: “We’re saving drivers up to £300 off the cost of installing home charging by cutting unnecessary red tape.

“The EV transition is in full swing – sales are up 36% on last year and over 190,000 have saved thousands making the switch in the last year alone.”

EV car drivers without off-street parking can now access the cheaper domestic electricity prices to charge their vehicles. The government say this will help people access savings of up to £1,750 on running costs.

With two new consultations that Labour have opened, there could soon be mandatory requirements for landlords and freeholders to make it harder to refuse renters’ applications. Building regulations could also be updated to ensure that charge points are installed in new and refurbished covered car parks.
