The Chief Nuclear Inspector has praised the industry for adapting to environmental pressures and geopolitical uncertainty in an annual report.

The Nuclear Regulatory Review 2025 highlighted that the governments energy ambitions for this industry have grown in recent years, which the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) will support through a rolling strategy.

The report has praised progress in cyber security at Sellafield and EDF’s efforts managing hacking risks. It also highlighted the successful transfer of Hunterston B Power Station license to Nuclear Restoration Services to enter the decommissioning phase.

Mike Finnerty, ONR’s Chief Nuclear Inspector and Chief Executive, said: “We cannot be complacent – it is vital to maintain high performance that ensures that local communities and workers are protected.

“The culture, right across the nuclear sector must change to meet the pace and scale of the government’s ambition. This requires a genuine transformation in how regulators, licensees and industry work together.”

It further emphasised that the sector has seen stronger industry engagement in innovation, improving supply chain performance.

However, the report states that incident rates remain above the long-term average, indicating that sustained improvement has been limited.
