Montrose Port has been selected as the preferred operations and maintenance base for SSE’s planned 1.4GW Berwick Bank B offshore wind farm, supporting 100 new full-time jobs.
The roles will include technicians and engineers responsible for the day-to-day operation of the wind farm throughout its expected operational life of more than 35 years.
A further 30 construction jobs are expected to be supported as existing offices at Montrose Port are redeveloped into the new operations hub.
Berwick Bank B is located around 38km off Scotland’s east coast and forms part of the wider 4.1GW Berwick Bank project.
First Minister John Swinney said: “Scotland’s ports are critical enablers of our offshore wind ambitions and key economic assets for surrounding communities, with the Port of Montrose set to become one of the world’s largest offshore wind operations and maintenance hubs, supporting the Berwick Bank, Seagreen and Inch Cape offshore wind farms.”
SSE secured a 20-year Contract for Difference for 1.4GW of generation from Berwick Bank B in the UK Government’s latest allocation round and is working towards a final investment decision expected next year.
If fully developed, the wider project could generate enough electricity to power around 6.5 million UK homes each year and meet more than 6% of current UK electricity demand.
