More than a quarter of landlords don’t know there will be exemptions from upcoming new rules on energy efficiency, according to a report from the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA).
New legislation is expected to come into force in 2027, with all privately rented homes required to meet the higher standard (Grade C as opposed to Grade E, the old standard) of energy performance by October 2030. Landlords will be responsible for keeping track of this.
The NRLA said: “Lack of awareness of the exemptions register could be a serious issue for the Government’s ambitions.
“If landlords are unaware that their older properties can be exempted from the new regulations, then this could incentivise them to sell up and focus on their properties that are already close to meeting the C target.”
Exemptions have been a part of the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) regulations since the requirement began in 2018 – however 46% of properties are bands D or E, meaning more exemptions are likely.
