Construction has begun on a new low-carbon transport hub in Sheffield designed to provide clean refuelling options for vans and trucks.
The facility, being developed by Aegis Energy at Smithywood Business Park will offer electric vehicle charging alongside hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) refuelling.
The company says the hub will be the first of its kind in the UK and is intended to support the decarbonisation of commercial road transport, which accounts for 31% of the UK’s net greenhouse gas emissions.
Once operational, the site will be able to charge and refuel multiple vans and trucks simultaneously. Its electric charging infrastructure is estimated to avoid up to 1.34 million tonnes of CO₂e between 2026 and 2060.
Lord Deben, Chair of the Council for Net Zero Transport and former Environment Secretary, said: “As Britain approaches its vital, generational challenge of combatting climate change, it is important that decarbonisation stretches to every corner of our industrial landscape.
“Freight, once a sector that was thought to be near-impossible to abate, is proving to be anything but; customers are demanding change, investment is flooding in, and new infrastructure is under way.”
Planning permission was granted by Sheffield City Council following consultation with local stakeholders. Construction is expected to generate £28.8 million in gross value added and create more than 250 jobs across the construction and supply chain.
The hub is scheduled to open in spring 2027 and will include secure overnight parking and driver welfare facilities.
