EDF Energy are said to be in talks to acquire smaller rival So Energy, which has 300,000 customer base.
Sky News reports that the French owned company faces competition from one other bidder and if it is successful, the deal is expected to acquire the customer base, rather than takeover the wider company.
So Energy has around 300,000 household electricity customers and is working with advisors at PWC to find new owners. A spokesperson from the company said: “So Energy is considering a range of options but cannot comment any further on them as it is commercially sensitive.”
EDF is one of the UK’s biggest energy suppliers with three million customers and five million accounts.
However it is currently lagging behind group leaders Octopus Energy and British Gas, which is owned by Centrica.
EON and Ovo Energy are two other suppliers and are in the process of merging. This merge could create a supplier similar in size to the market leaders.
In July, So Energy released a statement to announce the potential divestment and said it remains “business as usual with customers’ energy supply and support unaffected”.
