Solar developers in India are increasingly adding battery storage to projects as grid constraints leave growing amounts of renewable power unused.
Santosh Sarangi, Secretary at India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, said up to 42GW of solar projects are struggling to secure buyers, with around 18GW of solar-only projects particularly exposed.
Battery storage could help projects supply electricity when solar generation is high but the grid has limited capacity to absorb it.
Grid and transmission constraints accounted for nearly two-thirds of India’s renewable energy curtailment in the first quarter, according to Ember. Around 300GWh of clean electricity was curtailed (reduced) during the period.
The issue has become more pronounced during India’s hottest months. Between April and June the national grid curtailed 11% of solar generation, equivalent to around 8 billion kWh of electricity.
Ember has said India needs around 10GWh of battery storage immediately to reduce renewable energy losses.
