The Welsh Government is finalising a new National Energy Strategy aimed at expanding renewable energy while ensuring more benefits stay within local communities.
The strategy will set out Wales’ current and future energy needs and plans for the infrastructure required to meet them. Priorities will include community ownership, reducing energy bills and maximising the benefits of low-carbon projects.
Adam Price, The Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, said: “We are also determined that the communities hosting renewable energy developments are genuine beneficiaries through a new Wales Wealth Fund.
“As we create clean energy in Wales more of it will be owned in Wales. This will be led by our approach to create the Welsh Public Energy Company.”
Renewable energy targets will be replaced by emissions reduction goals, while decisions on new developments will be based on clearer evidence.
The government also wants to change energy planning with greater consideration of project scale, location and impact, alongside measures to protect productive agricultural land.
They say that communities will play a central role in deciding how and where new energy projects are developed.
