CarGurus launches AI car shopping tool for UK dealers

CarGurus has launched an AI-powered vehicle search tool in the UK, aiming to help dealers connect with more qualified buyers while simplifying car searches.

The launch of Discover coincides with CarGurus’ 10th anniversary in the UK and marks the marketplace’s latest investment in artificial intelligence (AI) to improve both the consumer buying journey and dealer lead quality.

Discover allows shoppers to search for a vehicle using conversational prompts rather than traditional filters, returning local in-stock vehicles alongside live pricing, deal ratings and CarGurus’ Instant Market Value (IMV) data.

Unlike conventional search tools, CarGurus said Discover is designed to guide buyers from vehicle discovery through to contacting a dealership about a specific vehicle.

The marketplace said the tool has been developed using more than a decade of UK market data, including dealer listings, pricing information and shopper behaviour.

CarGurus cited its own research showing 76% of UK car shoppers are open to using AI during the buying or selling process, while around one in five have already used AI during their most recent transaction.

Sam Zales, president and chief operating officer of CarGurus, said: “Ten years ago, we entered the UK with a clear vision: car shoppers and dealers deserved more transparency, smarter tools, and a platform genuinely built around their needs.

“Since then, we have helped millions connect with dealers to navigate one of the biggest financial decisions they will make with more confidence.

“We believe our product innovation momentum in the UK has never been stronger, with a clear focus on continuing to set the pace in the market through products and features built on AI-enabled personalisation and real-time market intelligence.”

CarGurus said Discover was initially developed for its US marketplace before being adapted for UK consumers.

Since launching in the UK in 2016, CarGurus has introduced features including deal ratings, time-on-market information and price drop alerts.

The business also acquired automotive community PistonHeads in 2019, expanding its dealer proposition with additional advertising opportunities and vehicle auction services.
