Heat pump training backed by government funding is winning strong support from installers as ministers try to build the workforce needed for the UK’s clean heating rollout.

New research from the mid-scheme review of the Heat Training Grant found 94% of those surveyed were satisfied or very satisfied with the training they received.

The government-backed programme offers £500 off the cost of training to become a heat pump installer or heat network professional, making courses low-cost or in some cases free.

The scheme is backed by £7m a year and has already supported more than 11,300 courses since launch.

Ministers say the programme is designed to help experienced heating engineers retrain in low carbon systems and take advantage of growing demand for clean heating.

Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey visited Daikin’s training academy in Manchester to meet installers and apprentices who have taken part in the programme.

He said: “The trainees and instructors here, and across the country, are on the frontline of getting Britain off the fossil fuel rollercoaster.”

He added: “With the opportunity for £500 off the cost of training, there has never been a better time to become a heat pump installer and learn the new skills powering the UK with clean energy.”

Daikin said it has trained hundreds of installers through the grant this year.

Daniel Jackson, Training Manager at Daikin UK, said the scheme is helping accelerate the upskilling of the heating workforce.

The push comes as demand for heat pumps grows. Heat Pump Association figures suggest 2025 was a record year, with more than 110,000 heat pumps sold across the UK and more than 60,000 MCS certified installations.

The £15bn Warm Homes Plan will support low and zero interest loans for heat pumps, solar panels and batteries.
