Lithuania has been held up as Europe’s renewable energy success story after rapidly cutting its dependence on Russian fossil fuels and transforming its power system in just four years.

A conference in the European Parliament, hosted by Renew MEP Petras Auštrevičius, examined how faster permitting, stronger investment and fewer barriers to clean energy deployment helped Lithuania quadruple solar and wind generation.

Auštrevičius said: “In April, solar and wind covered 84% of Lithuania’s electricity demand, while domestic production reached 99%.”

He added: “Lithuania is proving that renewables are central to energy resilience. Other countries can learn from Lithuania’s progress.”

Figures presented by Domantas Tracevičius, a member of the European Economic and Social Committee, showed the number of prosumers in Lithuania rose from around 18,800 in 2021 to 174,500 in 2025.

Solar capacity increased from 225MW to 3,284MW over the same period while wind capacity grew from 623MW to 2,535MW.

Tracevičius said: “As Europe endures one of the worst energy crises ever, Lithuania has already provided a stark example of how to turn a crisis into an opportunity.”

Lithuania is now targeting 100% renewable power for domestic electricity consumption by 2028, with ambitions to become a net exporter of clean electricity.
