Plaid Cymru has said its plans for a “renewable revolution” would help Welsh communities benefit more directly from the country’s natural resources while supporting energy security and net zero by 2040.
Plaid Cymru candidates Nerys Evans and Sioned Williams, said Wales should produce more renewable energy for the benefit of local communities.
The party’s manifesto, released last week, sets out plans to expand renewable energy in Wales and develop what it describes as a path to energy independence.
Plaid Cymru said this would include a National Energy Strategy to map future energy needs and infrastructure, alongside a new Renewable Energy Sector Deal to coordinate action between government, industry, education, communities and trade unions.
It also pledged to create a single national energy company with a remit to grow community ownership of renewable energy and help reduce bills over time, as well as a Wales Wealth Fund to invest a share of profits from Welsh renewables into community-led projects.
Sioned Williams said: “Wales is a nation full of untapped potential. From tidal power to wind energy, Wales’ natural resources could make us a world leader when it comes to the green transition, powered by renewable energy.“
Nerys Evans said Plaid Cymru’s plans would support community energy, affordable and energy-efficient housing and essential national infrastructure.
The party also criticised Labour’s energy record and accused Reform UK of taking a backwards approach on climate and renewables.
