Tourism has a carbon problem and Green Tourism thinks it has just fixed one of the hardest parts of it.

The sustainability body has launched what it says is the world’s first ISO-validated carbon tracker built specifically for the tourism and events sector, a big moment for an industry responsible for around 8% of global emissions.

The new Green Business Carbon Tracker has been independently verified by certification body Control Union to ISO 14064-3 standards.

That gives it third-party credibility at a time when green claims without evidence are increasingly being challenged.

Carbon accounting has long been a nightmare for tourism businesses.

Most emissions sit outside their direct control, from supply chains to customer travel, making Scope 3 reporting complex expensive and often inconsistent.

This tool is designed to change that. It offers a standardised way to measure and report emissions across all major sources using a methodology aligned with international standards and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

The tracker has been two years in development and has already been piloted with tourism operators across the sector.

It will be rolled out free to Green Tourism members in December and opened up to all tourism and events businesses from January 2026.

With pressure mounting on businesses to show credible progress towards net zero and growing scrutiny after COP30, demand is rising fast for data that stands up to inspection.

Green Tourism is leaning on more than three decades of experience in sustainable tourism to position the tracker as practical not theoretical.

The aim is to make credible carbon reporting accessible to small and medium-sized operators as well as major venues and event organisers.

For a sector under pressure to clean up its act, this could become the new baseline rather than a nice-to-have.
