Yorkshire Water has reached a major milestone in its smart metering programme, completing 100,000 water meter upgrades across the region.

The five-year roll-out began in Sheffield in January 2025 and is designed to transform how customers understand and manage their water use.

By 2030, the programme will replace 1.4 million existing meters with smart technology, providing customers with near real-time data and helping the company detect leaks earlier.

James Wilson, Manager of Smart Metering Delivery at Yorkshire Water, said: “Hitting the 100,000 mark is a fantastic achievement and testament to the collective hard work across the programme.

“From a standing start 18-months ago, we have worked collaboratively with our partners Netmore and MGroup, to mobilise the ambitious plan and we are now installing over 1,000 meters per day.”

Recent drought conditions and hosepipe restrictions, lifted on 10 December, have highlighted the importance of saving water and fixing leaks quickly.

Smart meters send more than 20 readings a day, improving billing accuracy and giving customers clearer insight into their usage.

Over the past year, smart metering has helped identify 7,000 potential household leaks and supported the repair of 4,500 confirmed leaks.

These interventions have saved 5.94 million litres of water and helped prevent potential property damage.

Smart metering plays a central role in Yorkshire Water’s ambition to halve leakage by 2050, enabling earlier intervention and reducing disruption for customers.
