Biotech firm MiAlgae has submitted plans for a new production site in Grangemouth as it ramps up efforts to scale its sustainable Omega-3 alternative.

The site, set to create 100 green jobs, will turn whisky by-products into microalgae — a plant-based substitute for fish oil used in aquaculture and pet food.

The modular facility will sit close to both distilleries and major customers, cutting transport and scaling sustainably as demand grows.

MiAlgae’s tech is already turning heads in the Omega-3 space and the firm is now eyeing new markets from meat alternatives to livestock feed.

The company says time is of the essence, urging speedy approval of the Grangemouth site — with alternative locations also in play if needed.

Douglas Martin, Founder and CEO of MiAlgae said: “Grangemouth has incredible potential for us as we look to the next stage of our growth. This location offers an ideal position to support our scaling efforts and meet the increasing demand for our  “biotech for good” solutions.

“With the creation of green jobs across engineering, production and research and development. We are confident that this new facility will help build a greener future and bring high-quality, sustainable jobs to the local community.”
