Wheatland Tube, a division of Zekelman Industries (Chicago, IL), has announced a new name for its proprietary, five-step galvanization process. The newly dubbed HDZ Coat is used in the company’s standard and fire sprinkler pipe for fluid, water and gas applications. The hot dip zinc process is completed fully in-house at Wheatland Tube, so that engineers and contractors who specify HDZ Coat will have full traceability and compliance with updated ASTM standards.

Each HDZ Coat pipe undergoes a thorough, five-step process that gives it superior performance attributes. The steps include:

  • Dedicated pipe acid bath that thoroughly cleans and rinses the product to ensure no contamination
  • 99.995% pure zinc application for longer lasting protection that is NSF/ANSI 61 drinking water approved
  • Air knife smoothed for smooth exteriors, removing bumps and air pockets that create dross and coat degradation
  • Inside pipe blowout to create a smooth interior, also removing dross
  • Passivation application that adds a protective layer on the pipe to prevent surface white rust or oxidation
