A ground-breaking website has launched, allowing residents and businesses across the West Midlands to monitor air quality in their neighbourhoods in near real-time.

The platform, available at cleanair.wmca.org.uk, provides data collected by the largest hi-tech sensor network outside of London.

Funded by government grants secured by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), sensors have been installed at homes, schools, businesses, hospitals and sports centres across the region.

These devices offer highly accurate, near-live data on microscopic particulates from wood burners, vehicle tyres, building sites, and factories—pollutants linked to serious health conditions such as asthma, coronary heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer.

The sensors also monitor nitrogen dioxide levels from roads and industrial areas, helping identify pollution hotspots.

By providing public access to this data, the initiative empowers local people to make informed decisions about their health and environment.

This project represents a major step forward in tackling air pollution and raising awareness of its impact. Residents can now take proactive measures to improve their quality of life, making the West Midlands a leader in smart environmental monitoring.

Mayor Richard Parker said: “Too many people are suffering the effects of air pollution. That has to change and it’s going to take bold actions from everyone.

“I’m already investing to make homes healthier, and businesses cleaner and greener. And we are innovating to move to a zero-emission public transport network.

“Now we have one of the country’s largest air quality sensor networks. I’ve taken action to give people the information they need to react and provide a brighter, healthier future for everyone.”
