The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected 11 companies for a pilot programme that aims to fast-track small nuclear test reactors.
It will work with the firms to construct and operate high-tech test reactors and get at least three of them to start operating in less than a year.
The Reactor Pilot Programme was announced in June 2025 and aims to expedite the testing of advanced reactor designs that will be authorised by the department at sites located outside of the national laboratories.
The selected companies are Aalo Atomics Inc, Antares Nuclear Inc, Atomic Alchemy Inc, Deep Fission Inc, Last Energy Inc, Oklo Inc, Natura Resources LLC, Radiant Industries Inc, Terrestrial Energy Inc and Valar Atomics Inc.
Each company will be responsible for all costs associated with designing, manufacturing, constructing, operating and decommissioning their test reactors.
Deputy Energy Secretary James P. Danly said: “President Trump’s Reactor Pilot Programme is a call to action. These companies aim to all safely achieve criticality by Independence Day and DOE will do everything we can to support their efforts.”
