The Trump administration has issued an emergency order to keep an ageing coal-fired power plant open in Colorado.

Unit 1 of the Craig Station plant was scheduled to shut down at the end of 2025 but the government issued the order directing Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association and co-owners to ensure it remains available to operate.

Following President Donald Trump’s re-election, coal plants across the US are reversing plans to shut down, with more than 17GW of generation capacity ordered to do so in 2025.

The order came into effect on 31st March 2026 and will run through to 28th June 2026.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said: “The last administration’s energy subtraction policies threatened America’s energy security and positioned our nation to likely experience significantly more blackouts in the coming years—thankfully, President Trump won’t let that happen.

“The Trump Administration will continue taking action to ensure we don’t lose critical generation sources. Americans deserve access to affordable, reliable and secure energy to power their homes all the time, regardless of whether the wind is blowing or the sun is shining.”
