Tokamak Energy has closed 2025 with three new performance records set to bring fusion that little bit closer.
Its ST40 fusion device, set new highs for plasma current, stored energy and fusion triple product as it prepares for a major upgrade.
The spherical tokamak at the company’s Oxfordshire headquarters has earned a reputation for punching above its weight in fusion research.
ST40 has now reached 1 mega-amp of plasma current, up from its previous best of 0.85 mega-amp, while almost doubling stored energy compared with earlier campaigns.
The results show that a plasma volume of just one cubic metre can hold immense power, an important step on the path to future energy producing machines.
Plasma current, the electrical current flowing through the plasma, is crucial for confinement because it helps generate the magnetic fields that keep the super hot fuel away from the vessel walls.
In future reactors, high plasma currents will also be needed to trap fusion born alpha particles that help sustain the reaction.
