On Tuesday 14 October, more than 140,000 people took to the streets of Brussels to protest the wave of austerity measures that Belgium’s right wing Arizona government wants to impose.
The national strike was called by Belgian trade unions ACV-CSC, FGTB-ABVV, and CGSLB-ACLVB to denounce measures which impact pensions, social benefits, working conditions, job security, and salaries.
The recently announced pensions reform would raise the age of retirement to 67 by 2030. The Arizona government has also announced socially repressive reform of unemployment benefits. Further cuts are planned for next year’s budget.
Present at the demonstration, industriAll Europe had a clear message : no to cuts and no to austerity. We fully support our Belgian affiliates in their ongoing fight against this wave of austerity measures that will affect workers from all sectors! Austerity is incompatible with the proactive industrial policy we urgently need.
The right to strike, a fundamental trade union right must be respected. Trade unions will continue to stand united in the fight for quality jobs and fair pensions!
