Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution and Policy in Practice have launched a partnership designed to identify vulnerable households and connect them to additional support during power cuts.
The initiative embeds Priority Services Register (PSR) eligibility into benefit checks carried out using Policy in Practice’s Better Off calculator.
The move aims to reach households who qualify for additional help but are unaware they can register for support. Across the UK, around £24 billion in financial support goes unclaimed each year.
Instead of waiting for customers to disclose vulnerabilities themselves, frontline advisers will now receive automatic prompts when a household’s circumstances meet PSR criteria. Advisers can then offer immediate registration during the same conversation.
Eliane Algaard from SSE said: “No one should be left in the dark because they didn’t realise additional help was available to them during power cuts.”
She added: “While we already support over 1.2 million people through PSR, we know many more are eligible but, for various reasons, haven’t signed up yet.”
The partnership also aims to support Ofgem’s goal of using data to identify vulnerable customers and reduce administrative barriers to support.
