Sizewell C has signed multi-year contracts with Urenco and Framatome to provide enriched uranium services and fabricate nuclear fuel, marking a major step in securing reliable fuel for the 3.2 GW plant.

Under a six-year agreement, Urenco will supply enrichment services for Sizewell C’s initial operating period.

The deal underpins around 1,000 highly skilled roles at Urenco’s Capenhurst site near Chester and establishes a low-carbon, UK-anchored front end of the fuel cycle.

A separate long-term contract with Framatome will cover the first cores and several reloads. Fuel will initially be fabricated at Framatome’s Romans-sur-Isère facility in France before transitioning to a planned UK factory, further localising the supply chain.

The project expects around 90% of its lifetime value to flow to UK businesses.

Once operational, Sizewell C is designed to power the equivalent of six million homes for at least 60 years and deliver average electricity system savings of about £2 billion per year.

At its peak, construction will directly support 10,000 jobs, with tens of thousands more across the supply chain, including 1,500 apprenticeships.

The fuel deals follow Sizewell C’s recent Final Investment Decision and a major order for two of the world’s most powerful steam turbines from Arabelle Solution.

Together, these milestones strengthen domestic capability across enrichment, fabrication, and core equipment, and reduce exposure to import risks.

Julia Pyke and Nigel Cann, Joint Managing Directors of Sizewell C, said: “These two contracts represent a major moment for Sizewell C and for energy security in the UK. This is about delivering the fuel supply for a project that will power 7% of the UK’s energy needs.”

They added: “The fuel that will go in our reactors will be low carbon and predominantly sourced from the UK, produced by skilled British workers.”

Boris Schucht, CEO of Urenco, said: “The importance of Sizewell C in the UK’s energy future cannot be underestimated and Urenco is proud to have been selected as a supplier of choice.”

Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said: “These long-term fuel contracts between Sizewell C, Urenco and Framatome demonstrate how investment in new nuclear directly supports skilled jobs, clean energy and industrial growth across the country.

“The commitment to develop a new fuel fabrication facility in the UK, alongside continued enrichment work in the North West, is particularly significant. These agreements underpin a project that will provide reliable, low-carbon power to millions of homes for generations.”
