Independent car and van leasing specialist Select Car Leasing’s co-founder and joint CEO James O’Malley is stepping down after two decades at the helm.

Founded in 2004 by O’Malley and fellow co-founder and CEO Mark Tongue, Select Car Leasing has grown from a small Reading-based start-up to a nationally recognised brand with over 120,000 vehicles leased to date and close to 300 staff members across 12 sites.

O’Malley played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s success, particularly through his contributions to technological innovation and customer service excellence, heading the development of Select’s customer relationship management (CRM) system.

Reflecting on O’Malley’s departure Mark Tongue said: “James’s departure marks the end of an era for the business, as he has been a key part of Select Car Leasing since its inception in 2004. Over the past two decades, James has achieved remarkable milestones and made significant contributions to the success of Select Car Leasing.”

Beyond his contributions to the business, Mr. O’Malley fostered meaningful community connections. A passionate supporter of Reading FC, he was instrumental in Select becoming Principal Partners of the club in 2021. That partnership expanded in 2024 to include sponsorship of the Women’s First Team and youth pathways, reflecting his commitment to supporting local sports and inclusivity.

“As we bid farewell to James, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to him for his co-leadership, vision, and commitment over the years. We wish him success and happiness in the next chapter of his journey,” said Tongue.

Moving forward, Select Car Leasing will operate under the leadership of a single CEO, supported by managing director Graham Conway and financial director Barry Anderson.
