Last August, Sona Biotechnology opened a new

80,000 square foot manufacturing plant in an

00:06.679 –> 00:10.510

old AT&T call center in Bothell, Washington.

00:10.880 –> 00:16.290

The Seattle-based startup, which manufactures

engineered cells used as medicines for cancer,

00:16.399 –> 00:21.569

diabetes, and autoimmune disease patients, had

been working on the project for more than a

00:21.569 –> 00:24.809

year.

The facility was expected to create hundreds of

00:24.809 –> 00:27.879

new jobs and bring manufacturing in-house.

00:28.290 –> 00:32.009

Before Bothell, Sona planned to make a larger

facility in Fremont,

00:32.369 –> 00:36.450

California.

Well, now it looks like Sona is bailing on its

00:36.450 –> 00:39.479

in-house factory future and outsourcing the

work.

00:39.689 –> 00:45.159

According to the Puget Sound Business Journal,

the company will rely on contract manufacturers.

00:45.409 –> 00:47.637

Sona says.

It will use contract development in

00:47.637 –> 00:53.196

manufacturing organizations or CDMOs, to make

its cell and gene therapy products.

00:53.317 –> 00:58.597

The company says these CDMOs have the capacity

and understanding to meet its near-term

00:58.597 –> 01:02.196

manufacturing needs.

While this is likely a short-term solution for

01:02.196 –> 01:06.677

the company, Sona says it’s still weighing

several long-term alternatives.

01:06.817 –> 01:09.287

As a result, the company reported a 44%

01:09.723 –> 01:13.613

$6 million loss, primarily due to its efforts

in Bothell.

01:14.024 –> 01:17.134

But setting up these factories is no easy task.

01:17.344 –> 01:22.384

They can typically take up to 20 months to get

up and running due to stringent manufacturing

01:22.384 –> 01:25.384

standards.

Sona has faced some troubles along the way,

01:25.624 –> 01:28.293

including cutting some product development late

last year,

01:28.624 –> 01:32.723

losing about 30% of its staff the previous year,

and most recently

01:33.250 –> 01:38.490

in March, it was sued by investors.

Still, Sona shows promise,

01:38.710 –> 01:44.231

including a potential cure for type 1 diabetes

using engineered cells.

01:44.570 –> 01:50.210

In June, the company shared promising results

of a six-month clinical trial that suggests

01:50.210 –> 01:56.361

that a functional cure for type 1 diabetes

without immunosuppression is possible.

01:56.771 –> 01:57.960

I’m David Manti.

01:58.291 –> 01:59.771

This is Manufacturing Now.
