Royal Mail has rolled out its 8,000th electric vehicle as it accelerates plans to cut emissions and reach Net Zero by 2040. The van was unveiled at Nottingham North Delivery Office, where 48 electric vehicles are already in operation.

The milestone cements Royal Mail’s position as the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet. The unveiling was led by Michael Payne, Member of Parliament for Gedling, as the company prepares for the Christmas rush. Nottingham North has added 14 seasonal staff and hired nine temporary vehicles to manage peak demand.

Royal Mail began electrifying its fleet in 2017 with the purchase of 100 electric vans. Nearly a quarter of delivery offices now use electric vehicles, which are charged on-site using a 100% renewable electricity supply. All vehicles are zero-emission at the tailpipe.

More than 100 micro electric vehicles are also being introduced in cities including London, Bristol and Brighton to cut emissions further and boost delivery efficiency. These will be in place ahead of Christmas.

Stuart Murphy, Royal Mail’s Head of Fleet Transformation, said: “Reaching 8,000 electric vehicles is a proud moment for Royal Mail.”

Michael Payne added: “It was fantastic to have the opportunity to personally thank the hard-working local Royal Mail staff here in Gedling.”
