UK energy supplier OVO Energy has announced the launch of OVO Renewables, a new business arm focused on repowering existing onshore wind farms across the country. The move marks OVO’s first step into the energy generation sector.
The company says the initiative will require an initial investment of hundreds of millions of pounds and could deliver up to 500 MW of electricity in its first phase—enough to power approximately 400,000 households.
OVO Renewables will use modern technology to upgrade and repower older wind farms, extending their operational lifespan and improving energy output. By targeting existing sites rather than developing new ones, the company hopes to speed up the delivery of clean energy.
“Britain built some of the world’s first onshore wind farms, but many are now aging fast. We’re creating a huge opportunity to unlock more clean, secure energy, without the delays that come with building new sites,” said OVO CEO David Buttress.
The company will work alongside UK-based renewable energy investor and developer NextLife Energy to source, acquire, manage and redevelop wind farms, pending the necessary regulatory approvals.
The initiative supports the UK government’s Clean Power Action Plan, which aims to deliver 30 GW of onshore wind capacity by 2030.
OVO Energy, which has primarily operated as a retail energy provider, is positioning this new venture as a key part of its transition toward a more sustainable and vertically integrated energy model.
The announcement comes as the UK energy sector pushes to decarbonise and meet national climate targets, with repowering projects seen as a faster and more cost-effective route to increasing renewable energy output compared to building entirely new installations.
More details on the locations and timeline of the first repowering projects are expected later this year.
