BYD has hit a major production milestone – the one millionth Dolphin Surf has rolled off the line in Xi’an, China.
This compact EV has shattered records to become the fastest-selling model in its class, achieving the figure just 27 months after production began.
Sold in China as the Seagull and in Latin America as the Dolphin Mini, the Dolphin Surf’s arrival in the UK and wider European markets has begun as BYD continues to expand its presence in the region.
Stella Li, executive vice president at BYD, said: “The Dolphin Surf has been a game-changer – topping segment sales more than 20 times since launch. It’s a truly global vehicle that breaks down the barriers to EV adoption with a simple yet powerful formula: it’s accessible, practical, and packed with BYD’s leading tech. Reaching one million units is a proud moment for us and a sign of what’s to come.”
Now available across Europe, including the UK, the Dolphin Surf brings compact dimensions ideal for urban driving (3,990mm long, 1,720mm wide, 1,590mm high) and makes smart use of BYD’s dedicated e-Platform 3.0 to maximise cabin space and boot capacity.
UK buyers can choose from three versions: Active with a 30kWh battery and 65kW motor; Boost with the same motor with a larger 43.2kWh battery, offering up to 322km WLTP range (or 502km in city driving) and Comfort, the the top-spec model adds a 115kW motor (0-62mph in 9.1 seconds), retaining the bigger battery
All models come well equipped as standard, including a 10.1-inch rotating touchscreen, LED daytime running lights, rear camera and sensors, NFC keyless entry, V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) tech, adaptive cruise control and more.
Boost versions add luxuries such as electric front seat adjustment, rain-sensing wipers and electric folding mirrors, while Comfort brings even more with heated front seats, 360-degree cameras, wireless phone charging and premium lighting touches.
As compact EV adoption still lags in Europe – particularly in the A- and B-segments where electric vehicles make up just 9% – BYD said it hopes the Dolphin Surf can offer an affordable alternative to petrol and diesel cars.
