Today’s announcement of £300 million of extra cash to boost the offshore wind sector and supply chains has generally been welcomed across the energy sector.
Adam Berman, Director for Policy and Advocacy at Energy UK, said: “Today’s announcement is a vote of confidence in the UK’s clean energy supply chain. It’s positive to see the Government continuing to recognise the role offshore wind plays in delivering jobs and growth across the country as part of a broader transition to clean power that can drive down bills and bolster our energy security.”
The wind sector has been particularly positive, Chair of the Offshore Wind Industry Council Richard Sandford said: “The offshore wind industry has worked hard to develop a deep understanding of where the UK could secure new supply chain investment and be internationally competitive.
“We have the opportunity to create thousands of new jobs in the UK, by focusing on advanced turbine technology, foundations and substructures, cables, smart environmental services, operations and maintenance.
Scotland is the defacto ‘home’ of British offshore wind and Claire Mack, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, said it would be a real help for the sector there: “This new funding announced today is a welcome boost for Scotland’s offshore wind sector which is central to our clean power future.
“Industry has repeatedly called for strategic ahead-of-time investment in domestic supply chains to ensure the economic benefits of offshore wind are captured in Scotland.
“Making these investments now across our diverse range of ports, manufacturers and suppliers will deliver the green industrial growth and high-skilled jobs we all want to secure.”
It was also welcomed by environmental pressure groups with Doug Parr of Greenpeace stating: “The green economy is growing three times faster than the overall UK economy right now, it’s encouraging that the government is trying to capitalise on this to ensure China, Japan and other European countries don’t reap all the rewards.
“But we need to make sure we create enough jobs to match the scale of the offshore wind infrastructure we’re building.”
