Octopus Energy is bringing clean, green energy to the heart of Manchester’s winter celebrations with the installation of its innovative portable wind turbine at Skate Manchester.

The 15-metre, 15kW turbine will partially power the city’s popular ice rink, marking a first for festive sustainability.

Replacing the traditional Christmas tree, the turbine will take centre stage as visitors skate around it, showcasing how renewable energy can be both practical and festive.

Designed to highlight the ease of onshore wind installation, the mobile turbine can be set up in just one day, making it a symbol of rapid, community-driven sustainability.

The partnership between Octopus Energy and Tamarisk Events, which also runs The Queen’s House Ice Rink in Greenwich, will see both rinks powered in part by clean energy.

The initiative will also support a community programme offering more than 5,000 people free or discounted skating sessions, alongside a 2-for-1 offer for Octopus Energy customers.
