A new mobile app has been launched during Gas Safety Week 2025 to help frontline workers safeguard vulnerable communities from the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO).
Developed in partnership with the Gas Safe Charity and the UK’s Gas Distribution Networks – Cadent, Northern Gas Networks, Wales & West Utilities, and SGN – the Think CO app provides essential real-time safety advice during home visits and emergencies.
Carbon monoxide, often called the “silent killer”, is odourless and tasteless, making it difficult to detect.
Each year, it causes hundreds of hospitalisations and preventable deaths across the UK.
The app offers frontline workers – from fire and rescue teams to social workers – immediate guidance on identifying symptoms, responding to emergencies, and understanding CO alarm legislation.
Dan Edwards, Social Impact Programme Lead at SGN, said: “We’re excited to launch the Think CO app, which will be a vital resource for frontline teams working with vulnerable households. By providing quick, easy access to critical CO safety advice, the app ensures that those working with vulnerable households have the support they need, whenever they need it.”
The tool also supports training by giving workers continued access to updated resources, reinforcing the Think CO programme which has already trained more than 4,000 frontline staff since 2016.
Hilary Bath, Programme Director at the Gas Safe Charity, added: “The Think CO app is a critical tool that will empower frontline teams with the resources they need to protect vulnerable individuals. By making CO safety information easily accessible, we’re helping workers to take swift, informed actions when it matters most.”
Backed by a £43,000 investment, the initiative will train 750 workers annually, supporting the UK’s drive to cut preventable CO incidents while building safer, healthier, and more sustainable communities.
