NESO has outlined its digital blueprint to power net zero.

Britain’s new energy system operator has launched the sector’s first ever Digitalisation Plan, setting out 16 actions to overhaul the UK’s energy data infrastructure and help hit the Clean Power target by 2030.

The plan, drawn up by the National Energy System Operator in partnership with DESNZ, Ofgem and key industry bodies, maps how smarter data use and better integration across sectors can support the shift to a digital-first energy system.

Shubhi Rajnish, NESO’s CIO, said: “To reach Clean Power by 2030 Great Britain needs robust digital infrastructure and seamless integration across systems, sectors and society. We very much see this as the first iteration and look forward to feedback.”

The plan pins responsibility on multiple bodies including RECCo, DCC, Elexon and NESO, with a focus on shared delivery and identifying missing owners where needed. Future versions will evolve with tech and policy changes.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks said digitalisation will be key to “delivering clean power and cutting costs for families.

“A flexible electricity system can help people lower their bills through new tariffs and technologies.”

Sir John Lazar, president of the Royal Academy of Engineering, welcomed the plan but called for urgency: “Digitalising the grid will require fast and significant, coordinated action. We need a serious push on the smart meter rollout and to ensure EVs and heat pumps work with smart tariffs.”

The report sets out the digital backbone needed to deliver 10 to 12 gigawatts of consumer-led flexibility by 2030, alongside key deadlines such as Half-Hourly Settlement.
