The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has launched a Nature Handbook to help food and drink manufacturers and their supply chains reach a Nature Positive state by 2030.

The guide sets out practical steps to measure impacts, manage risks, and mobilise finance for nature restoration and regenerative farming.

Food systems account for roughly 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions and over 80% of biodiversity loss.

With heatwaves, floods, droughts, and wildfires intensifying, FDF says restoring ecosystems is essential to secure ingredients and build a resilient food system.

Co-authored with the Broadway Initiative, the Handbook translates high-level targets into action manufacturers can take now.

It helps firms map nature dependencies and risks in their portfolios and value chains, then prioritise interventions with measurable outcomes.

A central focus is investment. The UK faces at least a £44 billion funding gap for nature restoration between now and the early 2030s.

The Handbook outlines financing routes including blended capital, supply-chain incentives, landscape partnerships, and outcomes-based contracts.

It also provides guidance on building internal cases for action and securing cross-functional buy-in. Companies are encouraged to align procurement, agronomy, finance and sustainability teams so nature outcomes are embedded in commercial decision-making.

FDF says manufacturers can accelerate regenerative practices such as reduced tillage, diversified rotations, cover crops, agroforestry and targeted nutrient management.

These practices improve soil health, water retention and farm resilience while cutting emissions and input costs.

The FDF calls for collaboration across the supply chain and with policymakers to turn guidance into landscape-scale outcomes.
