National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) has launched a new partnership with grid intelligence start-up Yottar, to develop a digital platform designed to speed up grid connection assessments and support electricity capacity.
The collaboration will combine NGED’s operational and engineering expertise with Yottar’s data modelling and software capabilities, to create an automated system for analysing available capacity on the distribution network.
As electrification accelerates, increasing numbers of projects are seeking connections to the grid, including renewable generation, battery storage, EV charging infrastructure, data centres and large industrial loads.
Developers are calling for faster and more transparent processes to understand where capacity exists and how quickly it can be accessed.
The new platform will generate detailed network models to provide rapid insight into potential connection opportunities and constraints, helping both network engineers and developers make better-informed decisions earlier in the planning stage.
NGED said improved digital tools could streamline connection workflows, reduce speculative applications and make better use of existing infrastructure.
