A growing coalition of countries is backing a major expansion of nuclear power, as governments look for reliable low carbon energy to support climate targets and energy security.
Belgium, Brazil, China and Italy have joined the international declaration to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050 bringing the number of supporting nations to 38.
The announcement was made at the Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris, where governments industry leaders and international organisations gathered to discuss nuclear’s role in the future energy mix.
Supporters argue nuclear is increasingly seen as a critical pillar of clean power systems alongside renewables.
The declaration commits countries to work towards tripling global nuclear generation capacity by mid-century.
That ambition reflects growing concern about the reliability of power systems – as electricity demand rises and countries attempt to phase out fossil fuels.
Dr Sama Bilbao y León Director General of the World Nuclear Association said the new endorsements added significant momentum to the initiative. And new projections suggest the industry could even exceed the target of tripling output.
Its latest outlook estimates global nuclear capacity could reach around 1,446 gigawatts by 2050 – above the 1,200 gigawatt goal set in the declaration if national plans are delivered.
Industry groups say achieving that level of expansion will require strong policy support long term financing and confidence that projects can be delivered at scale.
Governments are being urged to provide stable regulatory frameworks while financial institutions and large electricity users are being encouraged to signal long term demand for nuclear generated power.
The push reflects a wider resurgence in nuclear energy, as countries seek dependable low carbon electricity to complement intermittent wind and solar generation.
