MG has announced new battery and hybrid technology alongside the opening of a European Engineering Centre in Germany, as it looks to strengthen its position in the EV market.

The new Frankfurt-based facility will support MG’s “in Europe, for Europe” strategy, focusing on developing vehicles tailored to regional customer needs, including climate, road conditions and driving behaviour.

The move comes as MG continues to expand its European footprint, with cumulative sales now exceeding one million vehicles.

Semi-solid state battery to deliver EV battery improvements

At the same time, the manufacturer has introduced its new SolidCore Battery, describing it as the first semi-solid-state battery to reach mass production.

The technology is designed to deliver improvements in range, charging speed, safety and cold-weather performance, with introduction in MG electric vehicles in Europe planned from the end of 2026.

MG said the development reflects growing customer expectations around EV usability, particularly in areas such as range certainty and performance in varied conditions.

The brand is also advancing its Hybrid+ technology, which it said improves efficiency, refinement and power delivery, supported by software and hardware integration.

MG reported hybrid sales of 137,000 units in 2025, up 300% year-on-year, with the MG HS among the top 10 best-selling hybrid models in several European markets.

The company said its expanding engineering capability in Europe, supported by teams in Longbridge and its London design hub, underpins its long-term commitment to the region.

Kimi Li, vice president of MG Europe and the UK, said: “MG’s new SolidCore Battery and Hybrid+ technology provide tangible benefits for our customers and position our vehicles at the forefront of their class.

“Our strategy of developing MG vehicles in Europe, for Europe further enhances the desirability, versatility, and value that our cars deliver to customers across the European market.”

MG’s latest developments follow on from BYD launching its latest Blade battery technology that can recharge a vehicle from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes.
