The MG HS has claimed the title of the UK’s fastest-selling used car this June, selling in just 15 days on average, according to new data from Auto Trader.

The petrol-powered mid-sized crossover is outperforming the broader used car market by two full weeks, underlining its appeal.

While the HS leads the pack, the wider market continues to show healthy momentum. Used cars are currently taking an average of 29 days to sell – one day faster than in June 2024 and two days faster than in 2023 – highlighting robust demand and overall market resilience as the summer selling season begins.

SUVs remain dominant in the used market, accounting for 60% of the current top 10 fastest-selling models. However, hatchbacks and convertibles are the top-performing body types overall, both averaging just 28 days to sell.

The summer sunshine has driven a particular spike in convertible demand, with soft tops now selling a whole week faster than last June, and four days faster than in May.

Petrol models remain the fastest-selling fuel type overall, averaging 28 days to leave forecourts. Hybrids and diesels follow closely behind at 31 days. While electric vehicles (EVs) continue to take slightly longer – currently averaging 32 days – there are signs of improvement.

EVs are now selling three days faster than last month, and three-to-five-year-old used EVs are shifting in just 27 days, matching petrol cars in the same age group. Interestingly, plug-in hybrids in this age bracket are selling even faster at 26 days, making them the best-performing segment across all fuel types.

While nearly-new cars under 12 months old dominate the top three fastest-selling models, they’re actually the slowest group overall, with an average 36 days on the forecourt. In contrast, five-to-ten-year-old vehicles are proving the most desirable, shifting in just 27 days.

Marc Palmer, Auto Trader’s head of strategy and insight, commented: “Car buyers are still attracted by great value, which the HS offers in spades, and the fact it’s selling a fortnight faster than the national average highlights just how popular it is.

“The speed at which used cars sell is an accurate barometer of the strength of the market, and our data shows it’s in very robust health heading into the summer months. As always, the used market is nuanced, so I’d encourage retailers to dig into the data and insights to identify the most profitable stock for their forecourt.”
