Mars Inc. brand Kind Snacks announced Thursday that it plans to introduce the nation’s first paper wrapper that would be able to be recycled at consumers’ curbsides.
The company will package single “Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt” bars using the paper wrapper in a pilot project beginning in May. Those bars will be available through Oct. 1, while supplies last, at select Whole Foods Market stores in Connecticut, California, New Jersey, New York and Texas, along with additional stores in Arizona, Louisiana and Nevada.
The launch follows an initial, e-commerce-only pilot with paper-based Kind bar wrappers in 2023. The company says it hopes to ensure that all its packaging is “designed for recyclability” by 2030.
“We’re proud to continue to lead the industry with bold, forward-thinking and innovative solutions, not just for our packaging, but across our entire product portfolio,” Osher Hoberman, chief marketing officer of Kind North America, said in a statement.
