The UK’s independent electricity, gas and water networks have warned ministers to act fast following the Cabinet reshuffle, saying delays now risk derailing housebuilding targets and stalling national growth.
The Independent Networks Association (INA), whose members deliver around 80% of new electricity and gas connections for housing and thousands of new water connections each year, has called for urgent clarity on two key fronts: the Future Homes Standard and the final recommendations of the Independent Water Commission.
Nicola Pitts, Executive Director of INA, said: “Independent networks are already doing the heavy lifting on the UK’s growth agenda. They connect the majority of new homes and underpin EV charging, renewables and major regeneration projects. Ministers must now match the industry’s pace with clear, timely decisions to turbocharge the delivery of the housing sector of the future.”
INA members have a track record of delivering major national projects, from the expansion of Ebbsfleet Garden City to new housing at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
They’re also rolling out EV infrastructure, including the South West’s largest ultra-rapid charging hub at Salmon’s Leap in Devon.
That capability, INA says, is ready to be scaled. But developers and networks need confidence to invest and plan ahead.
Ms Pitts added: “Our members stand ready to accelerate connections, unlock sites and cut timelines—if government locks in the policy framework. Do the basics quickly and well: announce the Future Homes Standard, which has already been in development for five years, implement the Water Commission’s recommendations, and give the market a stable runway.”
She warned that every delay creates uncertainty for housing developers, local authorities and infrastructure investors.
“The sooner we have clarity, the faster we can deliver the homes, infrastructure and growth the country needs.”
